Bass Instincts was formed in 1984 and split up after five successful years doing local dances, regular ceilidh venues, festivals (Whitby, Sidmouth, Holmfirth), BBC Folk on 2, etc. The members of the band went on to form or join other bands, notably, Itchy Feet, The Metric Foot Band and The Hosepipe Band, and KEGS.

There were two LP recordings: Stripper's Waltz [1986, Dambuster Records] and Bassland [1987, Mayday Records].
The band has recently reformed for occasional gigs, playing a mixture of old favourites and new material. Original drummer and percussionist Jon May has been replaced by Christie Alston.
